Ahr Region
The mind numbing visuals of the Ahr offer a terrain comparable to that of the Mosel, all packed into a narrower valley. It's a feeling of pure amazement you feel when studying the vineyards of the Ahr and Mosel. Like vineyards in the Mosel, you find vines planted on amazingly steep cliffs, however, there is little Riesling planted in the Ahr. The vineyards rising behind the small villages dotting the valley floor are planted with red varietals. Ruling the Ahr are varietals such as Pinot Noir, Frühburgunder, and Dornfelder. Yes, red wines in Germany's northern most growing region of all places. Crazy? Yes, but at a select few estates such as Meyer-Näkel, you will find some of the finest red wines made in Germany today.
