Rheinhessen Region

Rheinhessen
With over 25,000 hectares (62,500 acres), Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine growing region. However, only the red soil based sloping hills along the left bank of the Rhine can truly make world class Riesling. The best vineyards are located in the villages of Nackenheim and Nierstein. In addition, the villages of Oppenheim, the walled town of Flörsheim-Dalsheim and in the opposite corner of the region the town of Bingen, all can produce very good to great Rieslings. However, the greatest potential is in vineyards such as the Nackenheimer Rothenberg and the Nierstein sites Pettenthal, Hipping and Brudersberg (Brudersberg is a monopole of Heyl zu Herrnsheim). Rieslings from the "Rote Hang" possess hallmark peach and apricot-like fruit augmented with almond, exotic fruit, and mineral notes.
