Franken Region

Franken has many attractions apart from its rich winemaking tradition. Franken is and always has been a dry wine country, dedicated to making hearty wines for drinking with the substantial regional cuisine. It is the only region in the world making top quality wines from Silvaner, its traditional quality-wine grape.|In a good vintage a Silvaner from the great Iphöfer Julius Echter Berg vineyard can have as much depth and persistence of flavor as Grand Cru White Burgundy. Riesling accounts for only four percent of the region's 6000 hectares, of mostly limestone, but it shares a disproportionately important role with the popular Silvaner. Würzburg, Randersacker, Eschendorf, and Iphofen all can produce superb dry Rieslings. Rieslaner and Scheurebe are also important varietals for the region.
