Rheingau Region

Rheingau
With the Rhein river's change of direction in Frankfurt, flowing east to west instead of south to north, many sunny south-facing vineyards are created. By the 13th century the monks at Kloster Eberbach had taken advantage of those potentially great sites and turned the Rheingau into one of Europe's most successful wine growing regions. In 1775 the first botrytis affected wines were made at Schloss Johannisberg. The Rheingau's tradition and history, in terms of both achievements and influence upon other regions in Germany and beyond, make it one of the most important wine producing centers in the world.|Though many of the more famous and traditional estates are not producing wines up to the vineyard's potential, there are several estates seeking to recapture the glory days of Rheingau wine making. Robert Weil, with his ethereal noble sweet wines and Gunter Künstler with this terroir driven dry Rieslings are two reasons wines from this region are regaining their world renown.
